Sgt. Laura Delgado Arrested for Shoplifting

A Bexar County Sheriff's Office sergeant is one of two women accused of shoplifting nearly $200 worth of clothing and jewelry from Macy's in South Park Mall on Tuesday evening, officials said.

San Antonio police arrested Sgt. Laura Delgado, 31, and Lori Marsden, 36, about 6 p.m. on one count each of theft from $50 to $500. They were held on $1,000 bail, with Delgado released after posting it early Wednesday.

An 11-year veteran most recently assigned to the detention unit, Delgado was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Ino Badillo. Delgado was off duty Tuesday night, he said.

A police report says the women were seen going into dressing rooms with merchandise that was not in sight when they emerged. When a security guard detained them, Delgado tried to escape and was aggressive, the report says.

The women continued to be argumentative in the store's loss-prevention office, where police found two shirts, a pair of jeans, a watch, two pairs of earrings and a bracelet in their purses, the police report says.

Delgado told police she works for the Sheriff's Office and her duty weapon was in her personal car in the mall parking lot. A deputy picked up the gun.

Sgt. Don LeDuff Accused of Shoplifting Perfume

A sergeant in the New Orleans Police Department's juvenile division retired Friday after he was accused of shoplifting a perfume bottle in a Metairie mall, authorities said.

Sergeant Don G. LeDuff, who served 34 years on the force, was accused of pilfering a bottle of fragrance from the J.C. Penney store at Lakeside Shopping Center in plain view of mall security guards, said Col. John Fortunato, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Deputies issued LeDuff a misdemeanor summons for theft of an item worth less than $100. The Sheriff's Office notified NOPD's Public Integrity Bureau, Fortunato said, and LeDuff opted to retire "with more than 30 years on the job," New Orleans police spokesman Garry Flot said.

It wasn't clear Saturday if the accusations would affect LeDuff's retirement status, Flot said. LeDuff did not return a telephone message.

LeDuff's legal entanglement offered an ironic twist to a career that began in 1975.
In the days after Hurricane Katrina, he was credited with fending off looters intent on breaking into the Marriott Convention Center Hotel, according to a story in New Orleans CityBusiness.

The following year, the nonprofit NOLA's Ark, which planned to repair the flooded homes of at least 50 metro-area first responders, rewarded LeDuff by selecting his eastern New Orleans home as one of the first three to be fixed.

Sgt Steven Mark Flamm Arrrested for Shoplifting & Child Endangerment

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sergeant could face charges of grand theft and child endangerment in connection to the shoplifting of $790 in clothing from a store in Thousand Oaks, authorities said Tuesday.

Sgt. Steven Mark Flamm, 42, was booked into Ventura County Jail Monday after he turned himself in at the Thousand Oaks police station, said Detective Eric Buschow, a spokesman for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Flamm, of Simi Valley, came to the police station voluntarily after Ventura County sheriff’s investigators contacted him and explained he was a suspect in the theft of two jackets worth a total of $790 from the Nordstrom store at The Oaks, Buschow said.

Flamm was initially stopped by Nordstrom’s loss prevention officers outside the store after the alleged theft, which occurred on the afternoon of May 1.

A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy responded to the scene at 346 W. Hillcrest Drive, and decided, along with store officials, to release Flamm pending further investigation, Buschow said. Authorities determined they had probable cause to arrest Flamm after reviewing surveillance video and the circumstances of the incident, he said.

Flamm was booked into jail on suspicion of felony grand theft and misdemeanor child endangerment, Buschow said. The child endangerment charge relates to Flamm’s alleged use of his young daughter as a participant in the crime, he said.

The girl is younger than 10 years old, Buschow said. He declined to discuss the specifics of the girl’s alleged involvement in the theft.

Flamm was released from custody Monday on $10,000 bail, Buschow said. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Ventura County Superior Court on May 18.

He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Flamm has been relieved of his law enforcement powers and placed on paid leave from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said department spokesman Steve Whitmore.

If the Ventura County District Attorney charges Flamm with a felony, he will be placed on unpaid leave, Whitmore said.

Emphasizing that Flamm is presumed innocent until proven guilty, Whitmore said the allegations are disturbing.

Flamm will remain on leave until the criminal proceedings are concluded, Whitmore said. If he is found guilty, he could be fired.

A member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department since 1988, Flamm recently worked in the department’s training bureau, Whitmore said.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeants can earn between $75,000 and $98,000 a year, plus overtime, according to documents posted on the county’s Web site.

Officer David Yanvary Arrested for Shoplifting

EDISON

An Edison police detective, a 22-year veteran of the force, has been charged with shoplifting from a township supermarket while working there as a security guard, police said Thursday.

David Yanvary, 54, was arrested Wednesday, about two weeks after ShopRite security officials say he stole $42 worth of items during an evening shift at the Route 1 store.

He was formally charged Wednesday at Edison police headquarters and released on his own recognizance, but has been suspended with pay, police said. Prior to the suspension, he had been assigned to the Edison Police Department Juvenile Unit.

Yanvary, whose yearly salary is $113,000, is accused of taking a candle, a DVD, cooking oil and honey while working at the store on March 17, police Lt. Joseph Shannon said. Shop Rite contacted police about the alleged incident, prompting an investigation by the department's Internal Affairs unit.

"Any allegation of illegal conduct by a police officer is a very serious matter,'' Chief Thomas Bryan said in a statement Thursday. He added that the investigation was continuing.

Yanvary's attorney, Timothy Smith, said his client was "overtly falsely accused'' by a "vindictive manager'' at ShopRite. He also said Yanvary has an "impeccable record'' during more than two decades as an officer and eight years as a township employee before that.

"We're relishing the opportunity to have the case adjudicated in court and have him fully vindicated,'' said the South Orange-based attorney, adding that he was "confident that he had all of the receipts'' for the merchandise.

Smith also said his client had filed for retirement before the charges came to light, and said he didn't believe there was a connection.

Township records show that Yanvary filed for a retirement that would be effective April 1.

Brian Collier, a former Drug Enforcement Agency special agent, was appointed police director a year ago after a series of embarrassing episodes involving several Edison police officers. The civilian post was proposed by first-term Mayor Jun Choi, who called for greater accountability in the force.

"Whenever a police officer is accused of a crime, it is a sad day for law enforcement and the community,'' Collier said in a statement to the Home News Tribune. "However, let me very clear, this will not stop our progress in bringing professionalism and accountability to this department."

Officer Jim Torbet Commits Suicide After Being Charged with Shoplifting

A senior police officer who had been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting wine from Marks and Spencer was found dead today after apparently committing suicide.

Jim Torbet, 54, was suspended from duty by Sussex police along with Chief Inspector Sharon Rowe after the pair were stopped leaving the store in Shoreham, West Sussex, in September.

The two high-ranking officers were released on bail pending further investigation into the alleged theft of wine.

His body was discovered in the early hours of the morning at his detached home in Peacehaven, East Sussex.

A police spokeswoman said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. Mr Torbet’s apparent suicide comes five years after his teenage daughter was murdered by her former boyfriend.

The headteacher of a school where Mr Torbet was the vice-chairman of governors condemned “procrastination” by those investigating his alleged shoplifting, which he claimed created an “intolerable situation for a very decent man”,

Mike Conn, principal of Bexhill High School, said that he would write to Martin Richards, chief constable of Sussex Police: “I would like to know why the allegation, which was relatively minor, took so long to investigate and secondly how it came into the public domain before he was even charged.

“Jim was a man of the utmost integrity and I don’t understand how in a country which prides itself on people being innocent until proven guilty, a man’s details were allowed to be released without him being charged.

“I am so incensed by this. The thought of him stealing a bottle of wine just doesn’t seem possible. If the police were going to charge him, why has it taken so long?

“This was a simple, straightforward shoplifting matter that is normally dealt with by way of a fixed penalty fine or in court relatively quickly.”

Mr Torbet joined Sussex police in 1980 and received five commendations before he and CI Rowe, district commander of Worthing, West Sussex, were stopped at the seaside M&S store late last month.

Security guards reportedly stopped the pair after they were caught on CCTV allegedly attempting to shoplift bottles of wine from the shop, in Shoreham’s Holmbush Centre.

Mr Torbet’s death was announced to colleagues by Chief Constable Richards, who described him as a “popular and valued member of our team”.

“Jim had given many years of loyal and dedicated service to Sussex Police, and in recent years has served as Detective Chief Inspector in the Professional Standards Department,” he added.

A tribute to the DCI posted on the website of a local newspaper read: “You were never too stuck up to have a laugh with us at the bottom of the ladder. Gone but never forgotten — a top bloke.”

In 2003 Mr Torbet’s 19-year-old daughter Rae was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend Dellwyn James, after the forklift truck driver lay in wait for her at her flat in Bexhill, East Sussex.

Mr Torbet broke down in tears as he saw James jailed for life at Lewes Crown Court later that year and outside court expressed his wish that James would be “third time lucky” with any further suicide bid.

Ms Rowe, 44, is a trained English teacher who joined the police in 1986 and twelve years later became the first woman to reach the rank of inspector in Brighton and Hove.

Former Officer Arrested for Shoplifting and Possession

Shawnee, KS

A former Overland Park Police officer and Shawnee resident was arrested June 14 on charges of shoplifting and possession of illegal substances.

Donald Kevin Duncan, 37, was apprehended for shoplifting about 3 p.m. at a Costco store, 12221 Blue Valley Parkway, Overland Park. Police then discovered that Duncan was formerly an officer in their department, from 1995 to 2005, last assigned to the investigation division.

Duncan was originally charged with theft greater than $1,000 but less than $25,000, and when he was booked, police discovered methamphetamines on his person, leading to additional charges.

Overland Park Police said Duncan resigned from the police force to pursue other interests. Duncan posted a $3,500 bond Monday after his first court appearance, and his next hearing is scheduled later this month.
