Officer Robert Melia Jr Accused of Molesting 3 Girls and Performing Sex Acts on Cows Pleads Not Guilty

A suspended Moorestown police officer who is accused of molesting three young girls pleaded not guilty yesterday in Superior Court in Burlington County.

Robert Melia Jr., 38, also pleaded not guilty to official misconduct, as well as to animal cruelty. In addition to the molestation charges, Melia is accused of performing sex acts on cows in Southampton.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office began investigating Melia after one of the girls reported an assault to her relative. She later told authorities she had been assaulted repeatedly inside Melia's Moorestown home.

Melia was arrested in April, along with his girlfriend, Heather Lewis, who is charged separately with sexually assaulting a juvenile male.

Melia, who was a patrolman, has been free on $410,000 bail since June.

If convicted, Melia and Lewis could spend the rest of their lives in prison, authorities said.

A suspended Moorestown, N.J., police officer is facing a grand jury indictment on charges of sexually assaulting three juveniles.

And 38-year-old Robert Melia Jr.'s legal troubles don't end there. He's also facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly performing sex acts with a cow in Southampton.

Melia's 33-year-old girlfriend, Heather Lewis, is also charged with sexually assaulting three juvenile girls and a teenaged boy.

The investigation began in April when the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office was contacted after one of the alleged victims disclosed to a relative that she had been repeatedly sexually assaulted by the defendants inside Melia's home.

Prosecutors said detectives seized a quantity of pornographic material and Melia's computer during a search warrant executed April 12 at his residence, located on Cottage Avenue in Moorestown. He was arrested without incident at police headquarters.

Lewis, of Stockton's Bridge Road in Pemberton, was arrested at the prosecutor's office that same day.

The animal cruelty charges were filed against Melia approximately two weeks after the initial charges, prosecutors said.

Police Officer Arrested for Having Sex with COWS

A South Jersey police officer already in jail after being accused of molesting three children, has now been charged yesterday with four counts of animal cruelty for having sex with barnyard animals, authorities said.

Patrolman Robert Melia, 38, was suspended last week by the Moorestown Police department after authorities raided his Moorestown home and seized a computer and pornographic materials.

Police say that several others were also arrested during their investigation in what police say was porn movie making involving minor children, animals and others.
Melia and Pemberton filmmaker Heather Lewis, 32, were charged April 13 with the sexual assaults of three girls at Melia’s house. The assaults occured on multiple occasions during the last five years, said a spokesman for the Burlington County Prosecutor’s office said.

Melia is being held on $510,000 bail at the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly. Lewis, who is charged with aggravated sexual assault and criminal sexual contact, is being held on $300,000 bail at the Women’s Detention Center in Pemberton.

The animal cruelty charges were filed after an examination of the seized materials, authorities said.

An investigation is continuing. Police said they were investigating four incidents involving cows.

Authorities say other charges may be forthcoming and possible others will be arrested in this case.
