Former Deputy Michelle Stiles Accused of Identity Theft

A former Knox County sheriff's deputy was arraigned in federal court in an identity theft case.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports 38-year-old Michelle Stiles is accused of stealing the driver's license from a crime victim and using it to open two credit accounts that she used to buy more than $9,000 worth of furniture and goods.

Stiles resigned from the Knox County Sheriff's Office after she was arrested on related state charges in November. She is charged in federal court with bank fraud, mail fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Stiles was arrested Wednesday by agents with the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

School Officer Jonathan Kelly Charged with Stealing Student & Teachers Identities

He was supposed to be keeping students and school employees safe. Instead, detectives say, he was helping himself to their personal information.

School District Police officer Jonathan Kelly appeared in court Wednesday charged with stealing identities of more than 20 people. The alleged victims are mainly former students and employees at schools where Kelly worked, most recently John I. Leonard High in Greenacres, and before that, Olympic Heights High in West Boca Raton.

Earlier this year, detectives with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and Boca Raton Police, arrested Kelly and a former Olympic Heights student, Daniel Elisha, charging them with a series of car burglaries. Detectives say that led them to Officer Kelly's use of school computers

In the new charges, the Sheriff's Office accuses Kelly of taking information off school computers, then opening ebay accounts, and applying for credit cards-- at least 13 times at one online bank. Detectives say Kelly had items and statements sent to his own West Lake Worth address, as well as mailboxes at two other homes in his neighborhood.

Search warrants of Kelly's home and car produced names and personal information of 53 people, according to investigators. 37 have been located. Many alleged victims are students who've graduated and moved on, making the case more involved.

After Wednesday's hearing, Kelly's attorney, David Roth, defended his client. "We're entering a not guilty plea," said Roth, "and this matter will go to a jury trial, as it stands now."

By mid-afternoon Kelly had posted an $11,000 bond and was released from the Palm Beach County Jail. The School District has placed Kelly on paid leave.

Former Deputy Harold Morales Arrested for ID Theft

The e-mails referred to one of the highest-ranking officers at the Hernando County Sheriff's Office as "racist." They alleged discriminatory treatment against some of the deputies. They were supposedly coming from Sgt. George Smith.

However, the e-mails were all the work of an online thief, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Former deputy Harold Morales, who was fired in October during his probationary period, has been charged with seven felony counts of identity theft after being accused of using a former supervisor's e-mail address to send out the e-mails.

The motive "appears to be revenge," said Sgt. Donna Black, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office. "It's not an issue of what he said as much as the identity theft."

Morales, 41, of Spring Hill, was arrested Monday and later booked into the Hernando County jail, according to the Sheriff's Office. It wasn't immediately clear if Morales remained in custody Monday evening.

A message left with an unidentified woman at Morales' home wasn't returned.

Former Officer William Bergin Appeared in Court for Identity Theft & Misconduct

SANDY, Ore.

A former Sandy police officer appeared in court on identity theft and official misconduct charges Thursday but his arraignment was abruptly halted after concerns were raised over a possible conflict of interest involving the defense lawyer in the case.

William Bergin, 27, stood quietly during the abbreviated hearing in Clackamas County.

The former Sandy police officer was charged with identity theft, official misconduct and misuse of a license.

According to a search warrant, Bergin collected confiscated driver's licenses and then passed them along to underage girls, who used the fake IDs to get into bars.

The Sandy Police Department issued a statement regarding the crimes.

"Whenever someone in the law enforcement community, past or present, is accused of wrongdoing, law enforcement officers are hurt by it. We are saddened and embarrassed by this," the statement said.

The department union president, who represents police, said Bergin’s fellow officers were unaware of the alleged criminal activity and "disappointed."

Bergin also faced a civil lawsuit in federal court.

In 2005, Bergin was one of two officers who shot and killed a naked, unarmed Portland man named Fouad Kaady.

For a short time after the shooting, the Kaady family retained well-known attorney Des Connell.

Connell was originally supposed to represent Bergin in court Thursday.

However, conflict-of-interest questions were raised during the hearing.

Kaady’s civil lawyer filed a motion asking that Connell be removed from the case.

The judge rescheduled Bergin's formal arraignment for Jan. 5 so that the lawyers can straighten things out.
