A Nassau County police officer was arrested Tuesday morning after he
allegedly stole baby food from a West Hempstead store at an earlier
date.
According to investigators, Thomas Welsh, 48, entered the Stop and
Shop located at 520 Cherry Valley Lane in West Hempstead and secreted
numerous pouches of baby food on his person using plastic bags and a
bungee cord. The value of the merchandise was approximately $40.
The Nassau County Internal Affairs Unit arrested Welsh Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at police headquarters in Mineola.
Welsh was charged with petit larceny and possession of burglary
tools. He was released on an appearance ticket and will appear at
First District Court in Hempstead on May 17.
A police spokesman told The Associated Press that Welsh, a 25-year veteran of the force assigned to the Records Bureau, has been suspended without pay for 30 days.

Sgt Timothy Richissin Faces More Charges of Voyeurism
A police officer already accused of recording women with a hidden bathroom camera, now faces more charges.
Suspended Cleveland Sergeant Timothy Richissin was charged with two more counts of voyeurism in Medina County Common Pleas Court.
Prosecutors say last year, Richissin hid a small camera inside the bathroom of the Hinckley warehouse where he ran a business.
Earlier this year, he was charged with tampering with evidence, voyeurism, obstructing official business and possessing criminal tools, after a female employee found the camera and called police.
"The sheriff's department went and did their investigation, located victim one, then they obtained computers pursuant to a search warrant, the computers were sent to Ohio BCI for analysis, and that analysis turned up the second victim," said Medina County prosecutor Dean Holman.
Richissin plead not guilty to the new charges. He also hired a new attorney to represent him.

Officer Eddie Smith Jr Waives Right to Hearing for Attempted Bank Robbery
A Fort Washington police officer who allegedly tried to burglarize a Temple Hills bank June 10 waived his right Thursday to a preliminary hearing in his upcoming trial.
After being arrested by his coworkers in police District 4, Eddie Smith Jr., 41, was suspended without pay.
His attorney, John McKenna of Upper Marlboro, did not immediately return calls for comment.
Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for the Prince George's County's state's attorney's office, said the office and the defense are working together to come up with a possible plea bargain.
Smith's next court date had not yet been determined, he said.
A 16-year veteran of the force, Smith was not on duty at the time of the incident but was carrying his department-issued handgun and was wearing his uniform.
Smith remained outside the SunTrust Bank at 4625 Old Branch Ave. during the attempted burglary while codefendant Earl Blake Sr., 52, of Capitol Heights tried to break into the bank's vault, police said.
The two men were found with burglars' tools, such as crowbars, an electrical cord, a cut-off saw and saw blades after fleeing from the scene.
Police picked up Blake on a nearby road and later picked up Smith after identifying him as a suspect.
Smith was charged with burglary, malicious destruction of property, for the damage to the vault, and with using a handgun in the commission of a felony. He was also charged with possessing and permitting the use of burglars' tools with intent to use in the commission of a burglary.
The criminal investigation has been turned over to the FBI. Richard Wolf, a spokesman for the bureau's Baltimore field office, said Friday the investigation is ongoing. After the criminal investigation and prosecution are completed, county police will begin an internal investigation.
Smith's next court date had not been determined, Korionoff said Thursday.
Blake was charged with burglary, malicious destruction of property and possessing burglars' tools with intent to use in the commission of a burglary.
Blake is being represented by public defenders Dent Lynch and Anne Gold-Rand.

A Cleveland police sergeant was suspended without pay following his arrest in connection with a video camera in a bathroom at a Medina County business.
Cleveland Public Safety Director Martin Flask said he suspended Sgt. Timothy Richissin Friday and that the officer will remain on suspension until the criminal charges in Medina are resolved.
Police say Richissin hid a small camera inside a bathroom at a warehouse in Medina County. An employee at the company found the images taken in the bathroom on Richissin's computer. Police said he invited a female Cleveland officer to work at the facility and recorded her in the bathroom. The crimes occurred in June, November and December, police said.
Richissin, of Brunswick, has been a Cleveland police officer since 1982.
He turned himself in Friday and will be arraigned at 9 a.m. Monday in Medina County Common Pleas Court. He's free on bond.

Deputy William Edwards Charged with Burglary has Been Fired
A Lee County Sheriff deputy accused of stealing car parts at an auto mall last month has been fired.
William Edwards, 23, was terminated from his post Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s legal advisor, Barry Hillmyer.
Edwards was arrested Jan. 25 on charges of burglary, possession of burglary tools and larceny. Fort Myers police reported Edwards was caught, alongside another man, taking lug nuts off cars at O’Brien Auto Mall on Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers.
Hillmyer said Edwards has until Feb. 26 to appeal his termination.
Edwards has entered a not guilty plea to the charges, and is scheduled for arraignment on Feb. 23.
