Former Officer Michael South Arrested for Burglary

A former officer with the Grover Beach and Atascadero police departments was arrested on burglary, elder abuse and possession of stolen property charges on March 31.

Michael Glen South, 57, is accused of using his position as the security director of the University Village senior living community in Thousand Oaks to burglarize homes. Because of possible emergency issues with seniors, South had key access to each residence.

Following up on a tip, officers served a search warrant at South’s home where they discovered multiple items believed to be stolen including guns, jewelry and medications.

In 2007, Atascadero fired South for sexual harassment and lying during a background check. Prior to working for Atascadero, South had been employed as a Grover Beach police officer from 1995 to 2002.

Officer David Reeves Charged with Armed Robbery

An ex-Riverside police officer accused of carrying out several off-duty armed robberies in Moreno Valley and Riverside while still on the force pleaded not guilty today to multiple felony charges.

David R. Reeves, 28, of Moreno Valley, is charged with four counts of armed robbery, two counts of attempted armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted kidnapping, burglary, being in possession of stolen property and enhancements alleging the use of a gun in the commission of a felony.

He's being held in lieu of $500,000 bail at the Robert Presley jail in Riverside.

Reeves, along with his two lawyers, appeared before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields, who set a felony settlement conference in the case for Dec. 12.

The defendant was arrested Oct. 14 after allegedly trying to rob an AutoZone on Sunnymead Boulevard in Moreno Valley. He was terminated from the Riverside police force, after seven years on the job, the day after his arrest.

"These alleged crimes are extremely serious," Riverside police Sgt. Jaybee Brennan said when Reeves was charged. "Quite frankly, if the allegations are true, nobody here will be standing by him. A lot of people are upset. It's a shock."

The first robbery occurred Oct. 13 at an AutoZone at 19486 Van Buren Blvd. in south Riverside.

The criminal complaint alleges that the following day, Reeves robbed three men, one of whom he allegedly tried to abduct, and then broke into and attempted to rob the AutoZone at 23510 Sunnymead Ave. in Moreno Valley, where he was apprehended.

He was carrying a stolen Itratec 9 mm handgun at the time of his arrest, according to court papers.

If convicted on all counts, Reeves could face more than 30 years in prison.

Officer David Graham Charged with Possession of Stolen Property

An Upstate officer was on the other side of the law Monday, accused of stealing from a local college.

In recent months, on the campus of Greenville Tech computers and equipment started disappearing from locked classrooms.

Some of the stuff stolen included 10 computers, two laptops, and four projectors. The missing equipment was valued at more than $10,000.

Campus police said they believe the thief was one of their own.

David Graham, who worked for the school police department for about a year, is now charged with possession of stolen property.

"What you don't want is police officers who are supposed to be above reproach and above what the average citizen is supposed to do taking care of things and securing them being the one stealing items from you," said Greenville Tech Police Chief Bobby Welborn.

Officers said they found the stolen stuff at Graham's home in Westminster.

They may have never traced the crime if it wasn't for a computer tech who lives in Dallas, Texas.

"If he'd been a nice guy I'd probably not have done anything, but he ticked me off the way he didn't want to help me return the item," said Shep Johnson.

Johnson unknowingly bought one of the stolen computers on eBay and said it wasn't what he paid for.

The listing said the computer was "acquired from a business that was shutting down."

But a lot of red flags went off including a screen that popped up on Johnson's new computer that said "Greenville Tech."

"I thought there's something wrong with this whole deal and I'm going to call this Greenville Technical College and see if they're missing a computer," Johnson said.

That information lead to Graham's arrest.

Investigators said the case is still not closed. They said they believe he didn't commit the crime alone.

According to the report, Graham told officers he had financial problems and that was his reason for the theft.

Graham has now been fired.

Former Trooper Robert Czora Arrested for Possession of Stolen Property

For the second time in less than a week, a former state trooper has been arrested.

Robert Czora, 41, of Morrisonville was arrested last week for felony possession of stolen property after police said he was in possession of items that had been reported stolen from the Northeast Printing and Distribution Co. in Plattsburgh, Czora’s former employer.

Czora was released from custody in that case after posting $10,000 bail but during the investigation of the theft, police had searched the former cop’s residence and said they found other stolen property including Jeep wheels and tires that were allegedly stolen earlier this year from Mountain View Motors in Plattsburgh. A Jeep stolen from the dealership was recovered but without its wheels and tires.

Police said the items were found under Czora’s porch and identified by the dealership as the stolen items. A new charge of felony criminal possession of stolen property was filed against him.

Police said that the investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible. Anyone who may have purchased items recently from Czora either personally or through the Internet is asked to contact State Police investigators at 518-563-3761.

In November, 2007, Czora was charged with official misconduct, a Class A misdemeanor, after it was alleged Czora had stopped a motorist on the Northway in the town of Ausable in Clinton County and improperly obtained and processed $300 as purported bail from the motorist.

He had driven the female motorist to a nearby bank so she could withdraw the $300 he said he needed for bail but when she later contacted authorities about her court date, she found out she had never been ticketed.

Czora was fined $1,000 and fired. 6-4-09

Trooper Robert Czora Arrested Again

A former trooper who was involved in a 2007 official-misconduct investigation has been arrested again.

Plattsburgh-based State Police arrested Robert Czora midday Friday and believed the former 14-year veteran of the force possessed property that was recently stolen from a local business.

Czora, 40, resigned from the State Police in November 2007 after a police investigation revealed that he scammed an unsuspecting out-of-state driver.

An investigation found that the former Valcour-based trooper stopped a speeding driver on Interstate 87 and then drove her to a Keeseville bank, where she withdrew $300 that Czora told her she needed for bail.

Czora took the money and never issued the woman a ticket.

He soon became the focus of an official-misconduct investigation after the woman contacted local authorities inquiring about her court appearance, unaware that she had never actually been ticketed.

During the investigation, Czora attempted to return the money to the woman through a third party but never explained why.

He later resigned, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor misconduct charge and paid a $1,000 fine.

Czora, who joined the agency in 1992, has never publicly commented on the misconduct.

The Morrisonville resident is now behind bars at Clinton County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.

He is facing a felony charge of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

It was initially unclear what items had been taken from Northeast Printing and Distribution Company and how the items allegedly came into Czora’s possession.

Investigators handling the case could not be reached for further comment early Friday evening and no additional information about the case was immediately available.

Officer Ravell Slayton Arrested for Theft & Misconduct

A Memphis police officer who was arrested on theft and misconduct charges turned in his badge Friday.

Ravell Slayton, 36, had been placed on paid leave Thursday, along with another officer who was arrested in a separate investigation.

That officer, Lt. Billy Smallwood, 45, remains with the police department pending an administrative hearing.

Slayton quit before his administrative hearing, which had been scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.

He is believed to have participated with his brother and another man in a stolen-property scheme.

Acting on a tip, undercover officers sold Slayton three 52-inch TVs he believed were stolen, police said.

He also told investigators he sat in uniform in a marked squad car outside a house where his brother sold drugs more than 50 times.

A Shelby County grand jury indicted Slayton on two counts of official misconduct, one count of theft and another count of attempted theft. If convicted of all charges, he could face up to two years in prison.

A federal grand jury charged Smallwood with using a fake identity to access Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and FBI databases, then selling personal information to a third party.

He's charged with three counts of wire fraud, one count of creating a false document in a matter within FBI jurisdiction and another count of computer fraud.

Vancouver Officers Facing Charges

Vancouver police are recommending criminal charges be laid against two police officers allegedly involved in attacking and robbing a National Post delivery driver last week.

A New Westminster officer will face charges of assault and possession of stolen property, while a West Vancouver officer is looking at a robbery charge, Chief Jim Chu told a news conference yesterday.

A third off-duty policeman from the Delta force who was arrested after the early morning assault last Wednesday will not be charged, Chief Chu said, citing evidence that the officer may have tried to intervene to stop the assault.

It was the chief's second statement in less than a week, the latest in a recent string of B. C. cops being accused of behaving badly.

"From the moment the Vancouver police were called to the scene, many of us realized that this would be a case that could polarize public opinion, shake their faith in the justice system and offer every police critic a new platform to speak from," Chief Chu said in a statement released yesterday.

"While I abhor the actions that are attributed to these members, I am very pleased with the [police department's] response."

All three officers spent a night in a jail after police responded to a 911 call outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel, where 47-year-old delivery man Firoz Khan claimed the officers attacked him unprovoked, robbed him, racially abused him and threatened to use a Taser. His assailants were alleged to have stolen his cellphone and $200.

Because the victim could not identify the officer who allegedly uttered racial remarks, police were not recommending the case be tried as a hate crime, Chief Chu said, noting the matter would be left to the courts to "take into consideration."

Chiefs from the New Westminster, West Vancouver and Delta departments will also be conducting their own investigations to determine the status of the three officers, he added.
