Corrections Officer William J Edwards Arrested for Burglary

FORT MYERS, Fla.

A Lee County Sheriff's Office Corrections Officer was arrested early Sunday morning.

Fort Myers Police went to O'Brien Auto Mall on 2850 Colonial Boulevard at 2:18 Sunday morning after somebody called police to report a possible burglary in progress. When they arrived they saw two men inside the car lot's fenced area.

When stopped, at first the two men denied any wrongdoing. Officers then searched the area and found a round nylon bag containing 18 lug nuts. The officers discovered the two suspects entered the compound with burglary tools and had removed the lug nuts from a 2008 blue Subaru Impreza.

The two suspects were arrested and charged with burglary of a structure, possession of burglary tools with intent to use, and petty theft.

One of those arrested was 23-year-old Lee County Sheriff's Office Corrections Officer William J. Edwards.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office said Corrections Officer Edwards began work with the Sheriff's Office on October 23, 2007.

Corrections Officer Edwards was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs Investigation.

In a statement Sheriff Mike Scott said, "While disappointing to say the least... the events of this weekend involving a Fort Myers police officer and a Lee County corrections officer being arrested proves the resolve of local law enforcement that nobody is above the law."

Edwards was released from jail Sunday morning.

If anyone knew this Corrections Officer, Billy as he is called by his friends, they would have expected this from him. I have personally come in contact with him several times and know his low morals and bad attitude. On top of being a theif, he is also an avid street-racer, and instigator of many illegal actions in the community. He carries the attitude of being higher than the law, because he is an officer, and this is the wrong attitude for any individual in charge to possess.
It is very disappointing, to say the least, to find that the Lee County Sheriff's Office does not investigate and keep track of their officers more closely. If they would have known how this particular officer was, they could have predicted this. I hope he is relieved of his duties as an officer, because people like this man are not who we need setting the example for the law.

How would we have expected this from him, seeing as to the fact of i've known him for my whole life... 15 years, i would have never thought of him to ever do something of this matter, also he doesn't street-race in the least anymore, he sold his Mach 1 for something more family style, Mazda-Speed to be exact, he is also a proud father of a beautiful little girl named Avery... I wouldn't think of him to ever do something to put her life in jail... so no, nobody that knows him would have ever expected this... and he has attitude yes, this is very true... but thats what gives him the drive to do what he does, i don't beleive he was the culpret behind this, he is easily pulled into things by other people... and how could you ever hope that to someone, to be releived of what helps them live, one mistake shouldnt throw the rest of your life out the window... If you actually knew him well you would know he is a very good man, who will do anything to support his family and be a loving father... This never even came to my mind when i think of William Joseph Edwards...
