Captain Edward Hope Jr Arrested for Forcible Sodomy

RICHMOND

Virginia State Police Captain Edward L. Hope, Jr., was placed under arrest in Chesterfield County at approximately 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, on one felony charge of forcible sodomy.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation in conjunction with the Chesterfield County Commonwealth's Attorney. The investigation is still ongoing.

Hope, 52, joined the Virginia State Police in 1979. His most current position with the Department was as the Division Commander of the Information Technology Division and was assigned to the State Police Administrative Headquarters in Richmond. He was appointed captain in March 2007.

Hope was placed on administrative leave without pay. As is standard procedure, an investigation will be conducted by the Department's Internal Affairs following completion of the criminal investigation.

"An investigation into this matter was initiated as soon as the allegation was brought to the attention of the Department," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. "To have a state police employee, especially an individual of rank, charged with a crime of this nature is most disturbing and disappointing. I am confident that the Commonwealth Attorney's office will prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law."

what happened to protect & serve? what happened to getting all the facts before running with half baked ideas & opinions? it sounds like you, like the rest of the media have nothing better to do than report bits of information that serve only to get people riled enough to give audience to these misinformed reports for ratings or what have you. why is it when you published this bit of information did you fail to include the fact that the ones who made these accusations have changed their stories on a number of occassions or why the state police seem to be bent on persecuting this man? for example on the origional bond why did the department push the prosecution to appeal? could it be that col. flaherty a political appointee not an actual officer might be trying to appear strong before the general assembley that happened to be in session when all this occured, maybe worried about covering his posterior? perhaps you should do a story on the departments reasons for displaying such pernicious behavior towards a man who, and this is key, has not been convicted of anything. why have these accusations come to light six years after this was alleged to have occurred. that sounds like a pretty interesting story no? or here is another, if this man did commit these crimes, why is it no one, i'm going to say this again lest there be any confusion, no one else has come forth with anything. history is full of people who have done things that the accused has been charged with. the difference here is that those individuals have a long list of victims not isolated incidents. does this man have a family, does he have chidren of his own? if so, where are they? why has no one talked to them? just a little curious dont you think? actually while typing this it seems reminiscent of the salem witch trials. we all know how well that went over. perhaps it would behoove us to remember that hmm? protect and serve indeed. how about "the slander column"? seems more fitting don't you think?
