Maywood Officer Found Guilty

LOS ANGELES

A former Maywood police officer was convicted Wednesday of using excessive force and filing a false report about the incident in which he knocked a suspect unconscious at a police station in May 2004.

A Superior Court jury deliberated for three hours before finding Michael Singleton, 43, guilty of both felonies, said Deputy District Attorney Margo Baxter.

Singleton struck the suspect after he had been arrested and handcuffed and then filed the false report, Baxter said.

Singleton, who later left the police force, faces up to 44 months in state prison when he is sentenced Aug. 11.

The Maywood Police Department is under investigation by state and Los Angeles County prosecutors over allegations of officer misconduct. Maywood is a tiny city just east of Los Angeles.

your article left out the part about the jurors in the first trial favoring acquittal by a landslide 9-3 [thats 9 votes for innocent] if this were joe-blow citizen there'd never been a 2nd trial huge waste of tax dollars perhaps a 3rd trial will result in a 12-0 acquittal

It's so easy for people to pass judgment from what they read in the paper and see on TV. It involves heuristics (look it up). It helps to know the facts. It also helps to know what takes place in the real world of police work and to know the accused. I know the facts, I am a former officer and I have worked with Mr. Singleton, personally. This is nothing more than a crusade/witch hunt, by the DA, to get a 'win'.....not justice. This is a way to put Maywood PD on trial regardless of the individual and the circumstances that surround this case. "The trial marks a test case for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, which has struggled in trials involving police brutality allegations." says the LA Times.
Again, it’s about winning...at any cost. I would not be surprised if allegations of juror tampering and coaching arise from this. What a travesty we have. Not only can’t we elect a president; not only is our country now based on 'disaster capitalism [and not democracy] but our justice system is ASS BACKWARDS. I'll blame this one on the republicans, just as I hold them to blame for so much more. Thanks, again, for fucking everything up and most of all for making me cringe every time I see an elephant. Why you ask..... Because I can.

I try not to pass judgment on most of the post on this site, and only post the facts that I learn about. That is why I leave the site open to anyone who wishes to post their opinion and other facts that I do not know about.

Thank you both.

I agree with you and also blame the damn republicans. They have done nothing but screw things up far worse than any other president has.

Its amazing to me how quickly people will pass judgement on the same individuals who WILLINGLY, and VOLUNTARILY put their lives on the line daily! Please, the next time an intruder comes to your house..watch for excessive force and let the officers know you would like the..rapist,thief or murdererer, to be treated fairly and with only as much force as is necessary to get him OUT of your wife, daughter, car or livingroom!!! The accused is a man of integrity who's goal in life to keep us all safe! And because of a gross miscarriage of justice there is one less competent officer to respond to your call. We have become so desensitized to criminals that we will spend millions making sure their rights are protected. A criminal in state prison knows more about the law than their lawyers! Lawsuits have been filed and WON on behalf of inmates that felt they were not receiving "adequate" medical and dental care!! A society that will place it's own forces on trial for doing what they are trained to do has lost perspective of what's more important. I am truly saddened by this conviction because it means the score is now CRIMINALS 1 the rest of us 0. My heart goes out to all who have lost dedicated loved ones to the violence and to the system.

Let the Truth Be Known!

First trial favored acquittal 9-3; a landslide result that lawyers will tell you is unethical to retry. The LADA was on a witch hunt to get that "cop" conviction they have struggled for years to get and relentlessly pursue. So they drag an innocent man who dedicated years of his life protecting even the DAs butt through hell. Now he is looking at 6-9 months of solitary confinement.

Scientific evidence and Physics 101 supports Singleton down to the skin tears on the "victim's" (HA!) skin. DA's so-called "expert" had no credentials qualifying him, yet jurors chose his personal opinion over science.

Trainee was directed by Singleton to help; he did not; with 6 wks OTJ, he stood there like a deer in headlights. Trainees Latest Story (changed over the years): Detainees head rammed into wall knocking him unconscious; he bounces backwards with blood gushing from his head, landing on Singleton who then applies a two-handed choke hold while simultaneously punching the already-unconscious larger man laying on top of him, all without getting any blood on him. Not sure even Superman could do that!

Juror #5 has seizures and takes cat naps throughout trial. Everyone has a right to a fully conscious jury 100 percent of the time; even cops. Had all evidence been properly considered by an unbias jury, guarantee you a deserved 12-0 acquittal would have resulted. Some jurors felt he was already guilty because he was charged. Please support your "brother" in anyway you can. Positive posts are one way.
